Hi! My name is Darren Wurz and I am privileged to be the freshman science teacher at V.L.T. Academy. This will be my second year teaching at V.L.T.  I will be teaching Conceptual Physics, Chemical Earth Concepts, Biology and some Science electives. I was born and raised in Toledo, OH.  I have a wide range of interests and pursuits.  Music is a major part of my life.  I love all kinds of music, especially jazz, and I play the violin and piano.  As a biologist, I love nature as well.  Travel, hiking and camping are activities I enjoy. I graduated in May, 2010, from Cedarville University with a degree in Life Science Education and Biology. My primary motivation for going into this field was to make a positive impact in the world of urban education, which has been and continues to be the focus and commitment of my life. I am committed to preparing my students for college, careers and life. Teaching Assignments:

Honors/AP Requirements:

AP Chemistry/ Chemistry Lab

Elective

One semester/ one credit

Prerequisite: A or B in Biology& Algebra I and a teacher recommendation

The Advanced Placement course in Chemistry/Chemistry Lab is designed to give students a critical outlook on scientific methods and concepts.  This course involves both the study of general concepts in Chemistry and the examination of specific configurations.   The one-semester course will examine and analyze the study of mathematics into chemistry, to improve problem-solving skills and reasoning ability.  Course concentration will focus on classification of matter, energy changes in matter, phases of matter, atomic structure, electron configurations, the Period Table of Elements, bonds between atoms, chemical formulas and nomenclature, and the mathematics of chemistry, kinetics, energy, pH, nuclear chemistry, and organic chemistry.  As in all AP courses, students are expected to complete additional readings and to write extensively both inside and outside of class.  The acquisition of the following skills is stressed:  classifying, analyzing, making inferences, interpreting and distinguishing fact from opinion. This is a college prep course that motivates rising high school students to experience undergraduate life, both academically and socially, while earning college credits.  Students enrolled in an AP course are required to take the AP exam in May and will be billed approximately $87.00.
